Raoul Moat - The Murdering Facebook Folk Hero. By Chris Bradley

Raoul Moat, a nightclub bouncer who went on a shooting rampage injuring his ex girlfriend, killing her boyfriend and blinding a policeman before shooting himself after a week long manhunt, is being described as a “legend” by a Facebook group.

R.I.P Raoul Moat You Legend has over 37,000 members, some of whom say the late fugitive killer was right to take revenge on Samantha Stobbart, 22, by shooting her and killing her boyfriend, Chris Brown.

Moat then shot PC David Rathband as he sat in his patrol car. The police officer told The Sun newspaper that he has been blinded by the attack.

The group members have posted comments or ‘like’ the killer, claiming Miss Stobbart is responsible for Moat’s rampage and subsequent death.

Andrew Logie writes: “R.I.P Raoul! I blame your ex!! Little whore.”

Others charge the police as a major part of Moat’s downfall. James Wilkinson writes: “We need more men like Moaty to clear up them dirty piggy c***s. R.I.P mate, u had the right idea.”

Even holidaymakers have been photographed in the field where Moat, who is gaining a cult folk hero status, died.

Prime Minister David Cameron condemned the Facebook page during today’s [Wednesday] Prime Minister’s Questions.

Mr Cameron said: “I cannot understand any wave, however small, of public sympathy for this man. There should be sympathy for his victims. There should be no sympathy for him.”

A Facebook spokeswoman said the page will not be removed. She added: “Facebook is a place where people can express their views and discuss things in an open way. We sometimes find people discussing topics others may find distasteful, however that is not a reason to stop the debate from happening.”

ITV News revealed tonight [Wednesday] that Moat had secretly taped sessions with social workers pleading for psychiatric help. In August 2009 he claims he is "living life on the edge just trying to get by on this next thing, and then there's another one, and another one."

Newcastle City Council responded to the revealing of the tapes by acknowledging they knew Raoul Moat's problems well, but the extent of their dealings with him were with regard to his two children.

A report "did not recommend any treatment, but examined Mr Moat's aggresive behaviour on the safety and well being of the children".

Northumbria Police arrested Moat on 12 occasions for violence over several years.

He had been released from prison on July 1 after serving an 18 week sentence in Durham Prison for assault.

The 37 year-old updated his Facebook status to reveal his deteriorating mental state. “Just got out of jail. I’ve lost everything, my business, my property and to top it all off my lass has gone off with someone else. Watch and see what happens.”

On July 3, the manhunt began after he was suspected of shooting Miss Stobbart and Mr Brown in Birtley, near Gateshead.

Seven days later, he was discovered living in woodland near Rothbury, Northumbria, and after a tense six hour stand-off, he was shot by police with a taser gun before turning his shotgun on himself.
